To celebrate Family Literacy Day, our first activity was all about the stories that live in our hearts. Each of team members chose their favourite book and shared why it is so special to them. From childhood classics to stories that inspired, comforted, and sparked a lifelong love of reading, these Staff Picks remind us that books connect generations and build strong readers, thinkers, and dreamers. We’re excited to share each staff member and their favourite read with you today!
Family Literacy Day – Event #2 is one of our most cherished traditions. For the past three years, one of our secondary students has volunteered to read a story to our daycare children right before nap time, and this year we were so excited to have Chloe step up! Chloe is a new student at St. Albert Learning Centre and is already taking on challenges with confidence and courage. We are so proud of you, Chloe, for volunteering, giving back, and sharing the joy of reading with our littlest learners. 🌟📖 To make the day even more special, each child received a St. Albert Literacy Swag Bag filled with their very own storybook and a Family Literacy Day activity book (plus a few fun surprises!) to take home and enjoy with their families. A heartfelt thank you to Jubilee Daycare for always welcoming our students with open arms and warm hearts. Together, we’re building a community of readers—one story at a time.
Today was extra special as Bell Let’s Talk Day fell on our Wellness Wednesday, a perfect fit for a day dedicated to mental health, reflection, and caring for one another. We began the morning with our amazing Cambrian College placement students who prepared warm, delicious pancakes for our entire school community; a simple act of kindness that brought smiles, connection, and comfort to everyone who walked through our doors. 🥞 In the afternoon, we were honoured to welcome Heather Osborne, who visits us once a month to work with our students on mental wellness. Her message today was a powerful reminder that our brains are trainable — the more we practice healthy thinking and coping strategies, the stronger we become. She spoke about how perspective matters, and how becoming aware of our triggers is the first step toward growth, self-regulation, and resilience. Bell Let’s Talk Day is about breaking the stigma, starting conversations, and reminding one another that it’s okay to not be okay — and that support is always available. Today, our school community chose compassion, connection, and courage. 💬
At St. Albert’s, we truly rely on every person to function as a strong, caring community. Today, we pause to honour two incredible Educational Assistants — Everest and Lynn. Everest not only supports our secondary students each day, but also leads our daily breakfast and lunch program with heart and dedication. Lynn is the powerhouse behind the PEACE Pens workshop, our amazing “shop boss,” while also providing constant support to our students. A special shout-out today, but know that you are appreciated every single day. Thank you for all you do for our students and our school community! 🌟
At 46 years old, Nathan is preparing to do something he once believed might never be possible; walking across the graduation stage this June to receive his Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Nathan, a member of the Mohawk Nation of the Bay of Quinte, has drawn strength from his culture throughout his journey. “Culture is important, as it has helped me connect to the Creator and Mother Earth,” he shares. Nathan’s path to graduation was far from easy. A serious back and neck injury as a teenager ended his secondary schooling and his promising football career with the Edmonton Eskimos. Years of chronic pain followed, along with the belief that graduating or finding meaningful work might never happen. Everything began to change after Nathan moved to Sudbury and enrolled in the Rehabilitation Program at Health Sciences North. As pool therapy and gym work helped him regain strength, something else grew too — his belief in himself. “I knew going back to school was the only way I could find a better job,” Nathan says. That belief led him to register at St. Albert Learning Centre this fall, despite fears, especially around math. His strategy? “Do a little bit every day.” Just as things were coming together, Nathan faced another major challenge when his girlfriend was diagnosed with cancer. With her encouragement, along with support from his family, teachers, and fellow students, Nathan kept going even bringing his schoolwork to the hospital and coming in whenever he could for extra help. Then came the turning point. “That’s when I realized I can actually do this,” Nathan shares. “I knew I was more than capable of success.” Nathan credits the entire school community for creating a positive, supportive environment. “I had four different teachers, and each one was incredibly supportive. That sense of community made all the difference.” Today, Nathan’s diploma has already opened doors. He’s now working with YMCA Employment Services, exploring new job opportunities and building a future he once thought was out of reach. His message to others is simple and powerful: ✨ “It’s never too late to get your education. If I could do it so can you.” Through PLAR (Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition), Nathan received secondary credits for his life experience, allowing him to complete his remaining credits in about 1.5 months of focused work. And he’s not done yet. Nathan recently earned his Safe Food Handlers Certificate and is exploring further training, including interest in becoming a Confined Space Rescue Technician. Principal Christina Raso shares: “Nathan is an outstanding role model for our school community. His perseverance, kindness, and determination shine through everything he does. He not only shows what’s possible when you stay committed to your goals; he also lifts others up along the way.” Nathan’s journey proves that new beginnings are always possible no matter your age or the obstacles you’ve faced. Yesterday morning, our students gathered together to toast to the New Year — literally! 🍞✨ Students enjoyed their choice of toast toppings, including butter, cheese, tomatoes, peanut butter, Nutella, Biscoff, and assorted jams. A huge thank you to our hardworking secondary team for organizing such a thoughtful and delicious way to start the day! Our Principal then led the toast and shared a message that perfectly captured the moment: “Just like this toast, this year is made better by what we choose to put into it — care, effort, and community. Let’s make this a year of progress, not perfection.” She also encouraged everyone to choose kindness and hope in all that they do. It was a simple, joyful, and meaningful celebration, a beautiful way to begin the year together as a school community 💛✨🍞
Today, our Principal, Christina, was honoured to be invited to speak with the new cohort of students in the Community Builders Trades & Diversity Training Program — a 12-week paid training program designed to launch learners into meaningful careers in the skilled trades. Christina shared the importance of training and education as powerful tools for long-term success. She explained that for students who have not yet earned their OSSD (Ontario Secondary School Diploma), St. Albert Learning Centre can support them by registering co-op credits through our partnership with Community Builders, allowing students to gain hands-on construction experience while earning credits toward graduation. She also introduced students to PLAR (Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition) — a process that recognizes learning gained through life and work experience, helping mature students earn credits for what they already know and can do. In addition, Christina shared that even students who already have their OSSD can continue their journey with us. St. Albert Learning Centre offers free prerequisite courses to support pathways into the trades, apprenticeships, and post-secondary programs, removing barriers and opening doors to future opportunities. Congratulations to the new Community Builders cohort on choosing to explore careers in construction and the skilled trades; a field built on hard work, growth, and opportunity. This student faced real challenges, stayed the course, and recently met her graduation requirements. The Caruso Club- Società continues to be an incredible supporter of our student-led business, PEACE Pens & Beyond, and we are so grateful for this ongoing partnership. A big thank you to Diana Iuele-Colilli, Board of Directors Member of Culture & Education, for always thinking of our students and for keeping our elves very busy these last few weeks before Christmas Our students helped prepare, assemble, and package 1,000 bags — yes, 1,000! — all within a tight deadline… and they proudly completed the order one day early!!! This is real-world learning at its best: teamwork, accountability, time management, and pride in meaningful work. This week marked the final distribution of our Christmas cards, bringing our total to 300 cards shared across senior living and supportive care residences in our community. Each card was handmade by a parent of one of our students and filled with customized, heartfelt messages written by members of our St. Albert Learning Centre school community. What began as a simple act of kindness turned into something truly magical. At Pioneer Manor, Lodge 1, residents were deeply touched by the beautiful Christmas cards created by the students of St. Albert’s. Each card brought smiles, sparked conversations, and added a little extra warmth to the season. As shared by Life Enrichment Worker Maria: “Thank you for sharing your creativity and holiday spirit with us — it made all the difference.” 📸 In this photo, Life Enrichment Worker Maria and resident Maria are joyfully sorting through the cards before delivering them throughout their 32-resident unit.
