St. Albert Learning Centre

Congratulations St. Albert 2024 Graduates!

We proudly recognized 114 students as graduates yesterday at Holy Redeemer Church! What an incredible achievement!

We were thrilled to celebrate with our Director of Education, Joanne Bénard and superintendent Peter Prochilo, Trustee Ray Desjardins, past trustee Estelle Scapputura, and Diane from Cambrian College! The entire education team was there too, including Mr. Scott, who retired in April, Ms. Vandermost on maternity leave, and our amazing clinical team from Compass, Melissa-Sue and Renee.

A special shoutout to our past cleaner graduate and current adult learning student Joey who volunteered to give out our programs – you truly embody the spirit of our community!

There were lots of tears of joy shed by many – it was an emotional celebration. We are so very proud of each one of you!

Honouring Excellence: Sudbury Catholic District School Board’s Employee Recognition Evening

We had an Incredible evening at the Sudbury Catholic District School Board’s Employee Recognition celebration at Bryston’s on the Park on June 12th!

The celebration kicked off with the prestigious Chairperson Award, and we were thrilled to see Lynn, our “shop boss”, among the three recipients, accompanied by her spouse, Stephen.

We also celebrated our dedicated employees who have reached the milestone of 25 years of service. Each received a beautiful handcrafted pen, lovingly made by our students from the PEACE Pens & Beyond Business.

The night concluded with heartfelt tributes to our retirees, including the remarkable Michael Scott, whose many years of dedicated service as an outstanding educator were celebrated. Michael was joined by his spouse, Renee, and his son, Jarred.

Christina, the principal of St. Albert Learning Centre, was honoured to sit with these two exceptional individuals who have given so much to our community. She expressed it best:

“Michael and Lynn will never truly know the profound impact they’ve had on our students. It has been an honour to lead alongside them and witness their incredible contributions to our school community. Congratulations Michael and Lynn!”

Student Operated Business, PEACE Pens and Beyond, Adds Handcrafted Indigenous Greeting Cards to Product Line!

Exciting news for next academic year! We’re launching a new product at PEACE Pens and Beyond: beautifully handcrafted greeting cards created by students from our Indigenous art project at St. Albert Learning Centre.

This initiative, funded by a call for proposals from SCDSB Indigenous Education and in partnership with Sudbury Art Gallery, involved at-risk students from three of our classrooms: U-Turn, ECPP, and PEACE Programs.

Led by Abanaki artist, Jessica Somers, the project focused on animals and their connection to emotions. Students from grades 9-12 learned Indigenous teachings about animals like the bear, eagle, bison, wolf, and raven, and translated these into messages for greeting cards.

Each student crafted five types of cards: birthday, love, sympathy, friendship, and thank-you, incorporating both English and Ojibway words.

This project not only allowed students to earn a visual art credit but also encouraged them to discover their spirit animals and draw inspiration from nature.

For every package of these unique greeting cards sold, we’ll donate to the Orange Shirt Society.

St. Albert Indigenous Students Honoured at Indigenous Awards Ceremony!

We are thrilled to announce that five of our outstanding students were honoured last night at the Caruso Club!

The awards ceremony celebrates the achievements of Indigenous students in the secondary education system. This event, which has grown tremendously over the years, is founded on the principles of partnership with the Indigenous community, teachers, guidance counselors, principals, parents, and the youth themselves. It fosters encouragement, acknowledgement, dignity, integrity, and pride.

Our honourees embody excellence, success, and the spirit of higher learning. We are incredibly proud of their advancements and contributions to our community.

Congratulations to all the awardees!

The Power of a Thank You: A Student’s Beautiful Tribute to Ms. Johncox

The heartfelt message reminds us of the profound impact our exceptional teaching team at St. Albert Learning Centre has on our students’ lives.

For those who might not know, we have an amazing teacher, Ms. Johncox, who leads the Correctional Learning Initiative at Sudbury Jail. She provides adults with the opportunity to improve their lives by earning their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

Ms. Johncox works tirelessly one-on-one with students, bridging the gap between them and our other teachers, ensuring they can earn a variety of secondary credits despite their circumstances.

This note is a testament to the dedication and compassion of Ms. Johncox and the entire St. Albert team. We are incredibly proud of the difference we make together!
